Paintings

INTRODUCTION

I retired from my City job when I was 58, but was persuaded to continue working at the same company as a consultant for a further 6 years.

Throughout my life I have always enjoyed visiting museums and art galleries and admired the images I saw there, but I had not thought of trying to produce paintings myself.

In September 2000, at the age of 66, I found that there were art classes at The Southwark Pensioners Centre in Camberwell and so I joined the Monday class there. After a few weeks, although I had enjoyed painting there, I decided that I preferred to paint unsupervised at home.

I first painted outdoors that same year in Cyprus and I was quite pleased with the results and thoroughly
enjoyed the plein-air experience.
Since 1994 I have travelled frequently on trips organised by the British Museum  and I have written diaries to record  most of these trips. They are written in English and Italian and are illustrated with my own photographs to remind me of what I had seen. These now came in useful and I am able to use them as a source of subjects for watercolour paintings. You will find these diaries in a separate section on my website.
I seem to be inspired to paint mainly flowers and birds; probably because of some of their brilliant colours; but I also like painting landscapes and seascapes. Painting water is always interesting and it is quite difficult at times to make it look real and convincing.
But I have found that, if painting something proves to be a challenge, I persevere and try different techniques and I am still learning. Apart from the few classes in Camberwell, I have never been taught to paint, so I really do not know where this urge and skill has come from.
For a few years now I have been painting small pictures, which are sent out with our Christmas cards to friends and family. I am told that people look forward to receiving these offerings and I am always pleased to know that they have given some pleasure. I have found that we now need more than 100 every Christmas. Although I paint more than 100 every year, I pick the best of the bunch to send out. They are all different and are chosen for the individual they are sent to. I also enjoy making personal Christmas cards to accompany the paintings.
For me painting is a pleasure and a challenge rather than something which I am obliged to do and I hope to be able to continue doing it in the years to come.

INTRODUZIONE
