20 January, 1997.

I arrived in Malta at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon and, after London, it felt very warm. The airport is very near to Valletta, the capital, and Sliema, where I stayed.

21 January, 1997.

I used the day to explore Sliema which is situated on a peninsular; it was quite easy finding my way around. This fort is quite close to the hotel but it isn’t very interesting. It did however have good views of Valletta and its fortifications, across Sliema Creek, and I took a number of photographs. In the evening I walked to St. Julians, along Tower Road, which is beside the sea all the way. I took about 90 minutes there and back and I was a little tired when I arrived back at the hotel.

22 January, 1997.

I spent the morning in Valletta; I went on the bus; about 15 minutes; and returned on the ferry; about 5 minutes.

I visited St. John’s Cathedral which I found very interesting. The ceiling was painted by Mattia Preti, born in Calabria, from 1662 to 1667 and depicts episodes in the life of St. John the Baptist. He is also responsible for a number of the altar paintings.

In the Oratory are the St. Jerome and also the Beheading of St. John, both painted by Caravaggio. The St. John was not on show; it is being restored in Florence. In the museum are a number of Flemish tapestries, designed by Jodocus de Vos in 1697, based on paintings by Rubens and Poussin. They were normally hung in the nave from Corpus Christi to the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul; this no longer happens as they are now rather fragile. They were last hung in their correct places in the nave in 1990 for the Pope’s visit to Malta and Gozo.

In the afternoon I went on a mini-bus to see something of the countryside. Malta is an agricultural country and very fertile in parts. It was a very interesting tour, on very minor roads, away from the towns. We went to two places with lovely views of the country and the sea. At this time of the year it is very green, but during the summer it is all dried up and withered.

Tomorrow I will return to Valletta and explore further.

22 Gennaio 1997.

23 January, 1997.

The Museum of Fine Art is quite an interesting gallery with paintings from most periods on display. There are a number of paintings by Mattia Preti which are very good.

Unfortunately there is no guide book; it is out of print; and only 10 postcards available, 5 showing Sciortino’s sculptures and 5 of various paintings. There were no reproductions of the paintings which I particularly liked.

There is a small room devoted to the sculptor Antonio Sciortino (1897 – 1947) some of which I found very interesting. A design, entitled ‘Disaster of a Submarine’, presumably for a memorial, is particularly good. There is a large memorial, in remembrance of the defeat of the Turkish siege of 1565, in Great Siege Square, by the same artist.

The Upper Barracca Gardens are notable for the views of the three cities across the Grand Harbour.

Again I returned to Sliema on the ferry.

23 Gennaio 1997.

24 January, 1997.

Until the Knights of St. John were given Malta in 1530, Mdina was the capital and today it was included in my tour. I liked the town, but we were there for a very short time, and I will be returning next week.

St. Mary’s church in Mosta has the third largest unsupported dome in the world. The architect was Giorgio Grognel de Vasse, who based the design on the Ancient Roman Pantheon in Rome. Building started in 1833 and took 27 years.

In 1942, during a very crowded service, the church was hit by 3 bombs. Two bounced off the dome and landed, without exploding, in the square; the third fell through the dome, and after hitting the interior wall twice, rolled across the floor, again without exploding. Not one person was hurt, and the people claim that The Virgin performed a miracle by protecting them and their church.

We finally visited the old fishing village of Marsaxlokk which is quite charming.

24 Gennaio 1997.

25 January, 1997.

The earliest recorded fort on Birgu, now Vittoriosa, was in the thirteenth century and it was certainly in use in the next two centuries. When the Knights of St. John arrived in 1530 they took over the existing fort and quickly reinforced it against any attack by the Ottoman Turks. This proved to be very wise as they were attacked in 1565 but were able, eventually, to repulse a formidable Turkish Armada. This part of the island was under siege for 3 months before the Turks retreated and Malta was again safe. The fort underwent various changes in the following years. In the nineteenth century the British took over.

The fort commands good views of The Grand Harbour and Kalkara and Dockyard Creeks, so the Royal Navy used it as a shore establishment, named first HMS Egmont, then, in 1933, HMS St. Angelo. The people of Malta were both surprised and amused, during the Second World War, when Italy announced that they had sunk HMS St. Angelo! They also claimed to have destroyed the railway and the coal mines. The railway had been closed for 10 years and the island has never had any coal to mine. The fort was extensively damaged by air attack because it is so near to the dockyard area. Between 1940 and 1943 the fort took 69 direct hits.

Recently the government have granted the Order of St. John the right to occupy the upper part; the Magisterial Palace and the chapel of St. Anne; which they are restoring.

The fort is only a small part of the defences of the Grand Harbour and Valletta built by the Knights.

25 Gennaio 1997.

26 January, 1997.

This morning we visited a tiny village in the south of the island to see the site of the Blue Grotto. The sea was too rough for us to take a boat and see inside the grotto. We continued to Vittoriosa where we had about 40 minutes to explore. There is good view of Senglea from there across Dockyard Creek.

In the afternoon I went to Valletta and fort St. Elmo, which I did not find as interesting as fort St. Angelo yesterday. The ticket, which I bought yesterday, gives access to both forts for 50 cents; less than one pound sterling.

Last Monday, on the plane from London, there was a party of blind people and their human guides, who are also staying in my hotel. Their helpers are from all walks of life and I had some very interesting conversations with them. One lady is sure that I would be a very good helper. If they took their guide dogs abroad with them, they would be in quarantine for 6 months when they returned to the UK, so they take human helpers. I think it is a very practical thing to do and it ensures that they can have a holiday abroad.

26 Gennaio 1997.

27 January, 1997.

From the Upper Barracca Gardens, this morning, I had a good view of the Royal Yacht Britannia moored in The Grand Harbour of Valletta.

I went to see the Manoel Theatre which is an eighteenth century gem. The interior, boxes etc., is made of wood which makes the acoustics very good. Antonio Manoel de Vilhena was Grand Master of the Knights at the time, and he decided in 1731 to build a public theatre, mostly with his own money, for the honest recreation of the people. On the very day that the Deed of Transfer of the site was signed, building commenced and in ten months it was finished. It was originally “Public Theatre”, later “Royal Theatre”, but in 1866 it was named for its founder.

In 1861 it was sold and became a private property, as it was considered to be too small, and The Royal Opera House was built. It was, for a time, a doss house for beggars; 50 cents to sleep in one of the boxes for the night. They were evicted in 1873 and the theatre was back in use; the Opera House had been destroyed by fire. When the Opera House was rebuilt and open, the theatre served, briefly, as a dance hall and later as a cinema. The Opera House was completely destroyed in the Second World War, and the theatre was again saved and beautifully restored. The original decoration was mainly intact and what we see today would look familiar to its founder.

Recently a fine old house, adjoining the theatre, has been converted to create an “L” shaped hall where concerts and exhibitions are held. It is now the National Theatre of Malta.

In the evening we had a lecture on the history of the Knights of St. John which was very interesting.

27 Gennaio 1997.

28 January, 1997.

We had a very busy day in Valletta and a few surprises.

Our first stop was St. John’s Cathedral; the band from HMS Britannia were about to give a concert in the cathedral square, starting in 5 minutes. Naturally, we all voted to listen to the band for half an hour and it gave our day a most enjoyable start. Unfortunately a lot of the people left the square and also entered the cathedral; we abandoned our cathedral tour until the afternoon when it was very quiet.

The Grand Masters Palace was our next destination, to see the impressive state rooms and the beautiful set of Gobelins tapestries. Unfortunately the Malta Parliament meets in this palace, and was in session that morning, so the state rooms and armoury were closed, but we saw them all in the afternoon.

We visited the War Museum and saw The Malta Experience, a film relating some of the history of Malta.

Our coach took us back to the bus terminus via the waterfront so that we could see HMS Britannia at ground level. We stopped within 100 yards of her for a few minutes and she looked very smart and clean.

28 Gennaio 1997.

Today we had a very pleasant trip to Gozo, which is about 5 miles from Malta. It was a beautiful warm sunny day and the sea was very calm. The ferry took about 20 minutes.

We had our own bus to take us around, first to Ggantija, to see two temples dating from 3500 BC which were very impressive. They are built of huge slabs of stone and would not look out of place at Stonehenge.

We had lunch, at a tiny fishing village, on the quay side, in the sun. Later we visited Victoria, the capital of Gozo, to see the small museum. It has artefacts from the Bronze Age, the Roman period and some inscriptions from the seventeenth century.

The cathedral was very nice; but cannot be compared to Valletta cathedral; and the citadel is very impressive, giving good views of the surrounding countryside.

29 Gennaio 1997.

30th January, 1997.

The Tarxien temples were discovered in 1914 by a farmer, these large blocks of stone kept damaging his plough.

These megalithic temples seem to date from about 2500 BC to 1500 BC. The great slabs of stone were moved using limestone balls, exactly like ball bearings; they have also been found in Sardinia. This is a very complex site having the remains of 5 different temples. Also found here were a number of different carved decorations including the usual spirals.

At Hagar Qim (pronounced Hajar eem) there is a very large container, used, they think, for burning aromatic herbs during religious ceremonies. These temples have been extensively reconstructed but it is easy to see where this has been done. We spent the afternoon on a boat tour of the harbours of Valletta; it took about 90 minutes; Marsamxett Harbour to the north and Grand Harbour to the south. It all looks very different from the water, rather than from the top of the fortifications. One gets a better idea of the height of the defences and some things are better seen from this angle.

In the evening a talk on the great siege of 1565.

30 Gennaio 1997.

31st January, 1997.

Today we went to the old capital of Malta, Mdina. It was so named by the Saracens when they conquered the island in 870 AD. Prior to that it had been Roman Melita and also the Punic capital.

The Saracens refortified the citadel and ruled for about 200 years; until the Normans arrived from Sicily and Southern Italy and drove them out. The Arabs left their language which forms a large part of the present language.

We first visited the cathedral; rebuilt, after the 1693 earthquake, in a restrained Baroque style; a very charming building. I passed on to the cathedral museum which has a fine set of copper engravings and woodcuts by Albrecht Durer (1471 – 1528).

St. Paul is the patron saint of Malta. Here he was shipwrecked on his way to Rome and converted the islanders. He lived for 3 months in a grotto, which we visited. We also saw the St. Agatha crypt and catacombs of the 4th century AD.

In the evening we had our Gala Dinner followed by the conclusion of the talk on the great siege of 1565.

31 Gennaio 1997.

1 February, 1997.

This morning I went to Vittoriosa, to see the Inquisitors Palace; a sixteenth century building with some lovely old wooden ceilings in the main rooms. (Wood on Malta has been a scarce commodity from early times.) The rooms were high but rather dark; the cells were completely dark and forbidding. The palace is only open on Saturdays and so this was my last chance.

On to the Oratory of St. Joseph which is now a museum. It contains some relics which the Knights brought with them from Rhodes, and the hat and sword worn by Grand Master la Valette at the victory ceremonies following the great 1565 siege. I also saw the church of St. Lawrence, next door, which was the conventual church of the Knights when they took over Malta in 1530.

Today Malta is celebrating the feast of St. Paul. His actual feast day is 10th February, but, this year, that is the start of carnival and so St. Paul has had to move. I called in at St. Paul’s Shipwreck church which is hung with red damask for the occasion and has the entire altar silver on display. A beautiful sight.

At 1 o’clock the band did a little tour of Valletta and paraded 6 flags, but in the evening at 5.30 there was a big procession and I could hear the fireworks from Sliema.

The other exhibitions, which I wanted to see, were closed, so I must return tomorrow and hope they will be open.

1 Febbraio 1997.

2nd February, 1997.

We had a video this morning showing some of the prehistoric artefacts which have been found in Malta. They are usually displayed in the National Museum of Archaeology; at present closed for restoration. The building is the 1575 Auberge of Province; a lovely building but considerably altered internally.

I then rushed to Valletta to St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral for the 10.30am service. Quite a traditional service, which I like. The church was built; at the expense of the dowager Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV of England; in 1839 – 1841. It is in the classical style and has two rows of columns with Corinthian capitals dividing the nave into 3 parts. It is quite plainly decorated but I think that is an advantage.

I visited the Sunday market, which is below St. James Bastion, but didn’t buy anything.

The rest of the day was spent reading and relaxing in the sun. I was sorry to be returning to London, very early the next morning, as I had had a very happy holiday.

2 Febbraio 1997.
